After a gradual transition from being a seasonal allergy sufferer to one ailing year round, along with a long-overdue visit to an allergist, enough was enough. Leaving the appointment, several proactive changes had to be made to make my home more allergy-friendly.
Most of the guidelines consisted of a ritualistic, weekly cleaning involving vacuuming with a HEPA-filter friendly unit, weekly bathing of pets followed by outdoor grooming, and protecting the bed from dust mite build-up.
Allergy bedding seemed concerning initially as I feared it would be quite costly, given the amount of surfaces that needed protecting. However, I was able to outfit everything from the mattress top, a foam topper, and multiple pillows for just under $100.
I was able to purchase most of the supplies online: a 6 pack of pillow covers, the queen-sized multi-function mattress cover (alternatives for twin, full, king, and cal-king sizes.
There has been some noticeable improvement in allergies upon sleeping and awaking, though all is not eliminated. I suppose the battle against such a dogged foe possibly requires more than just preventive measures, but perhaps the collective efforts can bring the allergy-prone one step closer to relief.
